Why Color and Bloom? π·
by Cristina and Sophia Chirino

πΌ Why Coloring?
Coloring is simple. It doesn't require expensive supplies or previous artistic experience, and it can be done in many different settings. Research involving children suggests that coloring and similar art-based activities may also help with short-term anxiety, fear, and stress during challenging situations.
For example, a randomized controlled trial studied 100 children ages 6β12 during a hospital procedure. Half of the children received a Trace Image and Coloring for Kids-Book activity, while the other half did not. The children who used the art-and-coloring activity had lower reported anxiety and pain than the control group. Read more!
Another randomized study focused specifically on 64 school-age children in a pediatric surgery ward. Children in the intervention group colored mandalas for 15β20 minutes before surgery. Researchers found that the coloring activity significantly reduced the children's preoperative anxiety compared with routine care alone. Read more!
Research has also looked at children experiencing longer-term hospital care. A 2025 randomized trial included 120 children ages 6β18 with cystic fibrosis. Children in the coloring group completed 30 minutes of mandala coloring each evening for six days, and researchers found a significant decrease in anxiety compared with the control group. Read more!
These studies don't mean that coloring will have the same effect for every child, and Color & Bloom isn't providing medical or therapeutic treatment. But the findings support something important behind our mission: simple creative activities can have value, including in settings where children may be experiencing stress or uncertainty.
Coloring gives children an opportunity to:
π§ Focus on one activity at a time
π¨ Make their own creative choices
π±Engage in a simple, screen-free activity
πHave something enjoyable to do during downtime
ποΈ Create with materials that are inexpensive and accessible
Creativity doesn't have to be complicated to make a difference.
That's one of the ideas at the heart of Color & Bloom.
π· Meet the Bloom Box
Our first major Color & Bloom project is the Bloom Box.
Bloom Boxes are small creative kits designed to give children the materials they need to sit down and create.
Each Bloom Box will include:
π¨ An original Color & Bloom coloring book
ποΈ A new set of crayons
π A Color & Bloom note
We'll hand-pack the boxes ourselves and work with hospitals, shelters, schools, libraries, and other community organizations that are interested in receiving them.
The goal isn't to make the box complicated. It's to make creativity easy to access.
A coloring book. A box of crayons. A chance to create.
π± This Is Just the Beginning
Color & Bloom is still at the beginning, and we want this website to document the process as we grow.
Right now, we're:
βοΈDesigning our first Color & Bloom coloring books
πΈDevelopingour first Bloom Boxes
π€Researching and reaching out to community organizations
π‘Learning how we can improve each project based on what actually works
As we complete projects, we'll share what we did, who we worked with, what we learned, and the impact we were actually able to make.
We hope Color & Bloom grows over time, but we're starting locally and intentionally. We want to complete projects, learn from them, and use those lessons to decide what comes next.
One project. One partnership. One Bloom Box at a time.
We're excited to see where Color & Bloom growsβand we're excited to have you here from the beginning. π·
Creativity. Comfort. Community.
